Dusty nos puedes contar un poco de donde procedes y que te ha llevado a dedicarte a la música?
Soy de Louisville, KY (EE. UU.) y he tocado música toda mi vida. Empecé a tocar la guitarra a los 7 años y a cantar y escribir canciones a los 16. Supe que quería ser músico profesional desde los 12-13 años cuando estaba viendo “Casi Famosos” con un par de amigos y mi amigo me preguntó si me gustaría «viajar y tocar música todo el día». A partir de ahí lo supe que querría ser músico profesional.
Veo que en los correos firmas como cantante, escritor y guitarrista. Vamos que eres un artista total. ¿En el disco eres tu quien toca todos los instrumentos o has tenido ayuda?
Escribí todas las canciones del álbum, aunque algunas las coescribí con amigos y compañeros compositores. En lo que respecta a las grabaciones en el estudio, hice todas las voces principales, la mayor parte de la guitarra y el bajo, y la armónica también fue todo mío. La batería estuvo a cargo de mi productor e ingeniero Michael Esser (Sundog Recording Studios – Nashville, TN) y luego hubo un puñado de otros artistas que también hicieron instrumentación adicional.
¿Tienes previsto plan de gira, supongo que únicamente será por tu país?
En cuanto a giras, mi manager y yo estamos trabajando en ello. No tenemos ningún plan fijo ahora mismo, pero estamos tratando de reservar algunas cosas en EEUU primero y luego nos dirigimos a Europa y el Reino Unido. Pero no me importaría ir a España antes de hacer una gira por Estados Unidos, jaja.
Vamos con el disco “The Vulture and The Fox. ¿De dónde te viene la inspiración para hacer un disco conceptual y como desarrollas la historia del pistolero, porque entiendo que eres amante del Western? ¿Si es asi cual es para ti el mejor western de todos los tiempos?
A muchos guitarristas se les conocen como «guitar-slinger», que es un derivado de «gun-slinger» (pistolero). Así, siendo yo un guitarrista que se mudó al oeste una vez y teniendo un amor por el salvaje oeste y la frontera estadounidense, todo se encajó.
¡Me encantan los westerns! Mi western favorito es “Django Unchained» de Quentin Tarantino. Es uno de mis directores de cine favoritos y creo que su interpretación del western fue brillante.
Me gusta esa combinación que haces de temas potentes – Bandit o The Conductor- con temas más pausados – No One Else o All I Can Dream. Esto nos muestra el Dusty mas desatado con el más tranquilo. ¿Eres así en la vida normal?
¡Gracias! Siento que combinar los diferentes estilos es una bendición y una maldición a la vez. Mi personalidad y estado de ánimo pueden variar mucho y la música es una gran forma de expresar estas emociones. Así que sí, cuando se trata de canciones rápidas con actitud intensa, y luego canciones lentas con una actitud más delicada son definitivamente un reflejo de mí como persona.
¿A nivel musical, cuales son las influencias musicales de Dusty Bo? ¿En el aspecto vocal en quien te inspiras? ¿Y cuándo tocas la guitarra?
Musicalmente estoy muy inspirado por la forma de tocar la guitarra de Hendrix, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin y Lynyrd Skynyrd.
A nivel vocal, diría que Robert Plant, Brian Johnson y Bon Scott, Steven Tyler y Freddy Mercury sean mis influencias.
Cuando toco la guitarra, me inspiro en la canción o estilo con el que esté tocando. Así que en una canción como “No One Else” hice lo mejor que pude para canalizar a Jimi Hendrix y tocar la guitarra en un estilo muy blues. En una canción como “Ready”, opté por un enfoque más parecido al de Joe Perry (Aerosmith).
En tu web, te defines como “Alt Southern Rock” y por lo tanto te podemos considerar como una banda más que forma parte de este gran movimiento musical, ¿como ves la escena sureña actualmente?
Creo que Southern Rock todavía está vivo y en un bien estar hoy. Hay algunos grupos realmente geniales, como Blackberry Smoke, Marcus King y Dirty Honey.
¿Nos puedes dar pistas de otras bandas sureñas que pueden ser interesantes en los próximos meses?
Algunas bandas de Southern Rock para conocer son Jive Mother Mary, Goodbye June, Mojo Thunder y Kentucky Ruckus.

La música que escucho en casa depende de la actividad. Cuando cocino me gusta escuchar Big Band/Jazz, cuando me coloco me gusta escuchar rock clásico y rock progresivo (Santana, Queen, Deep Purple, Jeff Beck) y cuando estoy en el dormitorio me gustan los Glass Animals o Deftones jaja.

First of all, thank you for dedicating a few minutes to your fans in Spain.
Dusty, can you tell us a little about yourself; where you come from and what has led you to dedicate yourself to music?
I am from Louisville, KY (USA) and have been playing music for my entire life starting guitar at the age of 7 and singing/writing songs at age 16. I knew I wanted to be a professional musician from the early age of 12-13 when I was watching «Almost Famous» with a couple friends and my friend asked me if I would like to “travel around and play music all day”. From then on I knew.
I see that in the mails you refer to yourself as a singer, songwriter and guitarist; a complete artist. On the album, do you play all the instruments or did you have help?
I did write all the songs on the album although I co-wrote several of the songs with other friends and fellow songwriters. As far as studio performances go, I did all the lead vocals, most of the guitar and bass playing and the harmonica was all me as well. The drums were all done by my producer and engineer Michael Esser (Sundog Recording Studios – Nashville,TN) and then there were a handful of other performers that did additional instrumentation as well.
Do you have any plans to tour? If so, I imagine it will only be in your country.
As far as touring goes me and my manager are working on that. We don’t have any set plans as of now but we are trying to get some things booked for the US first and then make our way over to Europe and UK. But I wouldn’t mind coming over there before I tour the US haha.
Let’s talk about the album, “The Vulture and The Fox. Where does the inspiration come from to make a conceptual album and how did you develop the story of the gunman? I take it that you are a lover of Westerns. If so, which is for you the best western of all time?
Many guitar-players are referred to as “guitar-SLINGERS” which is a spin off of “gun-slinger”. So with me being a guitar-slinger who moved out West once upon a time and having a love for the wild west and American Frontier it came together. I do love westerns! My favorite Western is Quentin Tarantino – “Django Unchained”. He is one of my favorite film directors and I feel his take on a western was brilliant
I like how you combine faster songs – “Bandit” or “The Conductor”- with slower songs – “No One Else” or “All I Can Dream”. This shows us two sides to yourself, the wild Dusty with the calm. Are you like this in your real life?
Thank you! I feel that combining the different styles is a blessing and a curse for my project. My personality and mood can be all over the place sometimes and music is a really great outlet for me to express those emotions. So yes when it comes to fast songs with intense attitude then the slow songs with more a delicate and gentle attitude its definitely a reflection of me as a person
On a musical level, what are Dusty Bo’s musical influences? As a vocalist, who inspires you? Who inspires you when do you play guitar?
Musically I am very inspired by the guitar playing of Hendrix, ACDC, Led Zeppelin and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Vocally – I would say Robert Plant, Brian Johnson and Bon Scott, Steven Tyler and Freddy Mercury.
When I play guitar I get inspired by which ever song/style I am playing with. So in a song like No One Else I tried my best to channel Jimi Hendrix and very blues like guitar playing. In a song like Ready I went with more of a Joe Perry (Aerosmith) kind of approach.
On your website, you define yourself as Alt Southern Rock", another band that is part of this great musical movement. How do you see the southern rock scene today?
I think Southern Rock is still alive and well today. There are some really great players out there such as Blackberry Smoke, Marcus King and Dirty Honey.

My home music depends on the activity. When I cook I like to listen to Big Band/Jazz radio, when I get stoned I like to listen to classic rock and prog rock on my record player (Santana, Queen, Deep Purple, Jeff Beck) and when I’m in the bedroom I like the Glass Animals or Deftones haha.
