Robert Jon & The Wreck son noticia ya que han publicado un nuevo trabajo y como una banda que empieza a tener reconocimiento a nivel mundial, nos pusimos en contacto con ellos. Aquí tenéis lo que nos explicaron Robert Jon & The Wreck.
Primero de todo agradeceros que nos contestéis a este cuestionario:
1.- Este año teníais previsto una gira por Europa para presentar vuestro nuevo trabajo, pero las circunstancias mandan y la habéis pospuesto para el 2021, ¿Cómo os ha afectado el COVID19? ¿En California las restricciones son tan fuertes como en España? ¿Os ha afectado en vuestro proceso de componer y ensayar?
No hemos podido tocar en directo desde la cuarentena. Hemos estado intentando de hacer tantas “livestreams” (transmisiones en directo) que podamos. Estaremos grabando una el 9 de mayo para el lanzamiento del disco nuevo, tocaremos todo el disco entero, desde el principio al final.
2.- El próximo 8 de mayo publicáis vuestro próximo trabajo: “Last Light on The Highway”. ¿Qué esperáis conseguir? ¿Cuándo lo vais a empezar a presentar en directo?
Solo queremos hacerlo mejor que el último disco. Somos muy trabajadores y solo intentamos de hacer la mejor música que podamos. Estamos haciendo una “livestream” para el lanzamiento de nuestro disco y será la transmisión más grande que hagamos en el futuro previsible hasta que se levante la cuarentena.
3.- Sois una banda californiana y eso de tocar southern suena un poco extraño en la soleada California siendo un estilo de música asociado más a la zona de Florida o Tennessee ¿Cuáles han sido vuestras influencias? ¿Hay escena “southern” en vuestra California?
Florida y California no son tan diferentes. En el Condado de Orange (sur de California) todos crecimos escuchando rock clásico en la radio. Aquí hay una gran escena de fans del Grateful Dead que aman la música jam. Personalmente crecimos escuchando cantautores como Ray Lamontagne y Damien Rice. Esto comenzó nuestro viaje hacia el mundo de la música country alternativo. Todavía nos encantan los sonidos del rock and roll a través de los tiempos, así que simplemente lo juntamos todo y obtuvimos Robert Jon & The Wreck.
4.- En SammyPlaysDirty, siempre proponemos a músicos con los que hemos contactado que nos digan que 5 canciones le han marcado para que se dedique a la música. ¿Cuáles son las vuestras?
Blowin’ in the Wind – Bob Dylan
Probablemente la mejor letra jamás escrita. Hay mucho material bueno de Dylan, pero este significa mucho para mí.
More than a feeling – Boston
Boston fue mi primer concierto y escuchar esta canción en directo cambió mi vida. Qué voz y qué banda tan talentosa.
Back in the Saddle – Aerosmith
Aerosmith fue otra banda que me interesaba mucho en el instituto y esta canción es genial. Directa y agresiva, una obra maestra de Aerosmith.
Trouble – Ray Lamontange
Esta es una de esas canciones que es tan buena que te hace querer escribir canciones. No hay nada mejor que la voz de Ray.
Holiday in Spain – Counting Crows
No solamente para los lectores españoles. Siempre he sido fan de los Counting Crows y esa canción tiene mucha emoción.
5.- Para mí, sois una de las bandas que practica southern rock que está más en forma, ¿qué opináis de la escena sureña actual? ¿Qué otros grupos conocéis que estén dentro de esta escena? ¿Qué bandas nos recomiendas?
Hay algunas grandes bandas en nuestra agencia Teenage Head Music. El propietario, Manny, tiene muy buen gusto al elegir nuevos talentos de Canadá y los Estados Unidos. Them Dirty Roses son unos grandes de Nashville, nos encanta Red Beard de España y no podemos recomendar bandas sin hablar de Rival Sons. Rival no son precisamente nuevos, pero nos encantan y creemos que todos deberían escucharlos.
6.- ¿Dónde os sentís más cómodos tocando, en estudio o en directo?
En directo es más divertido. El estudio es estresante, hay tanta presión para ser perfecto. En directo puedes soltarte, y si te equivocas, acaba tan rápido que la mayoría de la gente ni siquiera lo nota. En el estudio, no hay escondite.
7.- Sois habituales a girar por España, y os estamos agradecidos que vengáis a vernos, ¿Qué piensas del público español?
¡Son los más divertidos! Nos encanta España, nos recuerda a California. Nos encanta la comida y la cultura. Los españoles son muy amables y les encantan salir de fiesta, así que nos llevamos muy bien con ellos.

First of all, I would like to thank you for taking the time to answer our questions.
You were supposed to tour Spain this year to present your latest album, however given the current situation you have postponed everything to 2021. How has COVID19 impacted you? Have the restrictions in California been as strict as in Spain? How has this impacted your ability to write and rehearse?
We haven’t been able to play any shows here since the quarantine. We’ve been putting our heads together trying to do as many quality livestreams as we can. We’ll be shooting one May 9th for our record release. We’re playing the whole record front to back.
On May 8 you will release your latest work: “Last Light on The Highway”. What do you hope to achieve with this album? When will you playing the album live?
We just want to do better than we did the last album. We’re all about putting the work in so we’re just trying to make the best music that we possibly can. We’re doing a live stream for our album release and it will be the biggest stream we do for the foreseeable future until the quarantine is lifted.
You are a California band but play southern rock, something that seems a bit out of place in sunny California and more associated with places like Florida or Tennessee. What are some of your influences? Is there a southern rock scene in California?
Florida and California aren’t all that different. In Orange County everyone grew up on classic rock radio. There’s a huge scene of Grateful Dead fans here that love jam music. We personally grew up on singer songwriters like Ray Lamontagne and Damien Rice. That started our journey into the alternative country world. We still really loved the sounds of the rock and roll through the ages so we just put it all together and got Robert Jon & The Wreck.

Blowin’ in the Wind – Bob Dylan
Probably the best lyrics ever written. There’s so much great Dylan but this one just means a lot to me.
More than a feeling – Boston
Boston was my first concert and seeing this song live changed my life. What a voice and what a talented band.
Back in the Saddle – Aerosmith
Aerosmith was another band I got into in high school and this song just rocks so hard. Straight forward aggressive Aerosmith masterpiece.
Trouble – Ray Lamontange
This is one of those songs that’s so good it just makes you want to write songs. There’s nothing better than Ray’s voice.
Holiday in Spain – Counting Crows
Not just for the Spanish readers. I’ve always been a Counting Crows fan and that song has so much great emotion.
For me you are one of the best southern rock bands out there today. What do you think of the current southern rock scene? What groups do you know within the scene? What groups would you recommend?
There’s some great bands on our agency Teenage Head Music. The owner Manny has great taste in picking new up and coming talent coming from Canada and the US. Them Dirty Roses are great guys from Nashville, we love Red Beard from Spain, and we can’t recommend bands without talking about Rival Sons. Rival isn’t really an up and comer but we love them so everyone should listen to them.
Where are you more comfortable playing, in the studio or live?
Live is more fun. The studio is stressful, there’s so much pressure to be perfect. Live you can just let loose. If you make a mistake it’s over so quick most people don’t even notice. In the studio, there’s no hiding.
You regularly tour Spain and we are grateful for you coming to see us. What do you think of the Spanish fans?
They’re the most fun! We love Spain, it reminds us of California. We love the food and the culture. Spanish people are so friendly and love to party so we get along great!
