El año pasado los holandeses Copperhead County sacaban a la luz su primer disco «Brother», un extraordinario ejercicio de Southern rock y del que me enteré ya a principios de este 2021. Como más vale tarde que nunca, nos pusimos en contacto con ellos y aquí estan sus opiniones sobre el grupo, la escena sureña y sus planes de futuro.
Primero de todo felicitaros por vuestro primer trabajo “Brothers”.

1.- Sois una banda relativamente joven, ¿nos podéis contar como se creó Copperhead County? ¿Y cuál es la formación actual?
Copperhead County se formó en 2018. En la primavera de 2018 comencé a buscar músicos para formar una banda de rock sureña holandesa. Rápidamente me encontré a Robert que estaba buscando lo mismo.
Más tarde, de cara la primavera y verano, encontramos a otras personas con quienes tocar. Pero es muy difícil encontrar personas que estén comprometidos con los planes que teníamos para esta banda. Se necesita pasión al 100%, estábamos planeando muchos conciertos y teníamos grandes planes. Así que tuvimos que cambiar la formación varias veces para encontrar exactamente a las personas adecuadas
En octubre de 2018, Corvin se unió a la banda como vocalista principal, seguido por Alex en la batería en febrero de 2019. Niels completó la banda en el bajo a fines de marzo de 2019. Justo a tiempo, porque teníamos un montón de shows programados desde abril hasta el verano e incluso el otoño. Tocar +/- 50 shows en nuestro primer año nos convirtió en una máquina bien engrasada e hizo que nuestra banda creciera junta como una familia superrápida.
Niels nos dejó en diciembre de 2020 y Marja se hizo cargo del bajo. Marja había estado con nosotros desde el principio como cantante de coros en los shows más grandes. Con Marja al bajo, podríamos mantener todo «en familia» y tener siempre sus maravillosos coros con nosotros en la carretera, incluso en los shows pequeños.
La formación actual es la siguiente:

Robert van Voorden –guitarra principal y coros
Jordy Duitscher – órgano
Marja Boender – bajo y coros
Alex Stolwijk – batería
Recuerdo una banda sureña de los 90 llamada Copperhead, ¿vuestro nombre tiene algo de homenaje para esta banda?
Ja, no, es pura coincidencia, ¡pero he de decir que es un buen nombre para una banda!
Estábamos pensando en nombres con serpientes; que de alguna manera se identifica con el Southern Rock. Fue entonces cuando nació el Copperhead County, un condado ficticio, donde la vida es buena, donde tienes libertad para vivir tu vida de la manera que quieras y siempre haya buena música.
2.- Al escuchar “Brothers” una de las influencias más notables que uno puede percibir son The Outlaws, pero aparte de esta gran banda sureña, ¿qué otras bandas os sirven de inspiración?
Nos inspiramos en los clásicos como The Outlaws, Allman Brothers Band o Lynyrd Skynyrd, pero también en los nuevos íconos del Southern Rock como Blackberry Smoke. De hecho, estamos muy emocionados por el hecho de que el productor estadounidense Matt Wallace trabajará con nosotros en nuestro nuevo álbum. Matt Wallace es uno de los productores que trabajó en el icónico álbum «Whippoorwill» de Blackberry Smoke.
3.- Al escuchar un tema como “Wide Plains”, uno lo puede considerar como si fuera vuestro “Free Bird” particular. ¿Qué os parece esta comparación?
Esa es una comparación realmente agradable. Aunque se trata de un tema completamente diferente, tiene el mismo tipo de desarrollo hasta llegar a un final épico. Wide Plains trata sobre la ciudad natal de Corvin; una pequeña ciudad en la parte este de Holanda. Lentamente, esa pequeña ciudad ha sido ocupada por más personas, edificios y automóviles, hasta que no queda nada de ese gran espacio abierto que había antes.
4.- En vuestra página web os anunciáis diciendo Copperhead County “Southern Rock from the Netherlands”, ¿hay escena sureña en vuestro país o por el contrario os consideráis como un oasis en medio del desierto?
Creo que la escena del Southern Rock en Holanda está más integrado con el blues rock, el blues o incluso con la escena country. Hay bandas que tocan blues rock o incluso hard rock con un toque o sonido de rock sureño, pero no hay demasiadas bandas que tocan el clásico estilo de rock sureño.
Lo que nos diferencia un poco de las otras bandas de Southern Rock holandesas es que no solo nos centramos en Holanda, sino en toda Europa. Hay tantos lugares para visitar aquí en Europa.
Para mí ha sido una grata sorpresa que no solo en USA hay auténticas southern rock bands sino que en Europa también las tenemos. ¿Tenéis conocimiento de otras bandas a nivel europeo que toquen buen southern rock?
Creo que cada país tiene grandes bandas de rock sureño. Holanda también tiene Black Bottle Riot, una gran banda. Alemania tiene Modern Earl y muchos otros. Sin embargo, creo que la mayoría no están a nivel europeo, ya que se quedan en sus propios países.
5.- En SammyPlaysDirty, siempre proponemos a los músicos con los que hemos contactado que nos digan que 5 canciones le han marcado para que se dedique a la música. ¿Cuáles son las vuestras?
¡Pensé que sería bueno pedirles a todos los miembros de la banda una canción, para que podéis tener una idea de dónde viene nuestra inspiración en general!
Corvin : “Gimme three steps” de Lynyrd Skynyrd. Esa canción despertó mi pasión por la música y todo creció desde ese punto.
Alex : Sin duda “Paradise City” by Guns N’ Roses. Vi un concierto de GnR en Paris en 1992 y sabía que ESTO es lo que yo quiero hacer.
Robert : Mi razón para ponerme serio con la guitarra fue casi una experiencia religiosa.
Cuando escuché por primera vez “Apache” de The Shadows, a la edad de 6 o 7 años, me quedé impresionado por el sonido y las emociones que sentí. Justo había empezado a tocar la guitarra y esta canción me hizo darme cuenta de que la guitarra sería muy importante en mi vida futura.
Jordy : “Poor Born” by Dead Moon. Primera canción que escuché de lo que sería mi banda favorita. Un ejemplo de cómo puedes mover a la gente con música, incluso con música muy simple. Eso me inspiró a meterme activamente en la música. Todavía me pone la piel de gallina.
Marja : “Mad World” by Gary Jules. ¡Me inspiró a cantar cuando tenía 7 años y eso comenzó la pasión que tengo por la música! Con el paso de los años, mis gustos por la música se desarrollaron hacia el lado más pesado.
6.- Cuales son vuestros planes para este 2021? ¿Vais a realizar actuaciones? ¿Únicamente por Holanda o tenéis previsto realizar algún tipo de gira europea?
Esta primavera vamos a hacer shows donde y como podamos. Principalmente en sitios «corona segura / sentados», pero en este momento es lo que hay. Hay bastantes shows programados ahora y veremos cuales se llevarán a cabo. Siempre es genial interpretar nuestras canciones para una audiencia, incluso si es sólo para 30, 50 o 75 personas.
Ojalá en verano haya festivales pequeños que puedan hacer algunos espectáculos al aire libre. Para el otoño, nuestro plan es lanzar nuestro nuevo álbum en septiembre y comenzar una nueva gira inmediatamente después. Esta gira nos llevará, como la primera gira, por Europa; en cualquier lugar que podamos, ¡con suerte también en España en la primavera de 2022!
7.- Para acabar, para alguien que no os conozca todavía, ¿qué se va encontrar cuando escuche Copperhead County?
Encontrarán una honesta banda de Southern Rock, con un guiño a las antiguas bandas clásicas y un guiño a las modernas bandas de Southern Rock. Una banda con 5 personas apasionadas por hacer de Copperhead County un nombre conocido en Europa.

Last year the Dutch Copperhead County released their first album «Brother», an extraordinary exercise of Southern rock and which I found out already at the beginning of this 2021. As better late than never, we got in touch with them and here are his thoughts on the group, the southern scene and his future plans.
First of all, congratulations on your first album «Brothers».
Thank you very much. We are very proud of our first album!
You are a relatively young band; can you tell us how Copperhead County was formed? What is the current line-up? Copperhead County is established in 2018. In the spring of 2018 I started looking for musicians to form a Dutch Southern Rock band. I quickly hooked up with Robert who was looking for the same thing.
Later that spring and summer, we found several other people to play with. But it’s very hard to find people that are ready to commit to the plans we had for this band. 100% passion is needed, we were planning many gigs and had big plans. So we had to change the line-up a few times to find exactly the right people.
In October 2018 Corvin joined the band on lead vocals, followed by Alex on drums in February 2019. Niels completed the band on bass in late March 2019.
Right in time, because we had a ton of shows booked from April onwards into the summer and fall. Playing +/- 50 shows in our first year made us a well-oiled machine and it made our band grow together a a family superfast.
Niels left us in December 2020, and Marja took over on bass. Marja was with us from the beginning as a background singer at bigger shows. With Marja on bass, we could keep everything “in the family” plus always have her wonderful backing vocals with us on the road. Even with small shows.

I remember a southern band from the 90’s called Copperhead, does your name have any relation to this band?
Ha! No that is 100% a coincidence. I must add, it was a great band for sure!
We were thinking about names with snakes in it. Somehow it connects with Southern Rock. That’s when Copperhead County was born. A fictional county, where life is good, freedom to live your live the way you want it, AND always great music available.
2. When listening to “Brothers” one of the most notable influences one can hear is The Outlaws, but apart from this great southern band, what other bands have inspired you?
We get inspired by the classics like of course The Outlaws, Allman Brothers Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, but also the new Southern Rock icons like Blackberry Smoke. Actually, we are very excited about the fact that USA producer Matt Wallace, will be working with us on our new album. Mr Wallace is one of the producers that worked on the iconic “Whippoorwill” album of Blackberry Smoke.
3. When listening to a song like “Wide Plains”, one can consider it as if it were your own particular “Free Bird”. What do you think of this comparison?
Oh that’s a really nice comparison for sure. Even though it’s about a completely different topic, it does have the same kind of build-up to an epic end. Wide Plains is about Corvin’s hometown. A small town in the eastern part of the Netherlands. Slowly that small town gets consumed by more people, more buildings and more cars, until there is nothing left of that great wide open space there once was.
4. On your website you describe yourself saying Copperhead County “Southern Rock from the Netherlands”, is there a southern rock scene in your country or do you consider yourself an oasis in the middle of the desert?
I think the Southern Rock scene in the Netherlands is more merged together with the blues-rock and blues or even country scene. There are bands that do blues rock or even hard rock with a southern rock twist or sound, but not too many band that do the classic Southern Rock vibe. But what makes us a little different than a lot of other Dutch Southern Rock bands is that we not only focus on the Netherlands, but on all of Europe… We have all these wonderful places to go, right in our European backyard.
For me it has been a pleasant surprise finding that not only in the USA are there authentic southern rock bands but we also have them in Europe. Do you know of other bands at a European level that play good southern rock?
I think each country does have some great Southern Rock bands for sure. Netherlands also has Black Bottle Riot, great band. Germany has Modern Earl and many others. I think most are not on a European level though as they kind of stick to their own countries.
5. At SammyPlaysDirty, we always ask the musicians we contact to tell us what 5 songs have inspired them to dedicate themselves to music. What are yours?
I thought it could be a good thing to ask all bandmembers for a song, so you can get a feel where our general inspiration comes from!
Corvin : “Gimme three steps” by Lynyrd Skynyrd. That song sparked my music passion and it all grew from that point.
Alex : Definitely “Paradise City” by Guns N’ Roses. I watched the “pay per view ”concert of GnR in Paris, 1992, and knew: THIS is what I also want!
Robert : My reason to get serious on guitar was almost a religious experience… When I first heard “Apache» by The Shadows, at the age of 6 or 7, I was blown away by the sound and the emotions I got from it. I just started to play guitar and this song made me realise that the guitar would become very important in my future life.
Jordy : “Poor Born” by Dead Moon. First song I heard of what became my favourite band and for me the example of how you can move people with music, even dead simple music. That got me active into music. Still gives me goosebumps.
Marja : “Mad World” by Gary Jules. It started me with singing as a 7 year old girl and that started the passion i have for music! As the years went on, my music taste developed to the heavier side as well.
6. What are your plans for 2021? Are you going to perform any shows? Will you stay in Holland or do you plan to do some kind of European tour?
This spring we are playing shows wherever and however we can. Mostly in “corona proof / seated” settings, but at this point……we’ll take that. There are quite a few shows booked now and we will see which shows will go on. It is always great to perform our songs for an audience, even if it’s a maximum of 30, 50 or 75. Hopefully in the summer there will be small scale festivals that can do some outdoor shows. For the fall, our plan is to release our new album in September and start our new tour right after that. That tour will take us, just like the first tour, through Europe. Anywhere we can, so hopefully also Spain in the spring of 2022!
7. Finally, for someone who doesn’t know you yet, what will they find when they listen to Copperhead County?
They will find an honest Southern Rock band, with a wink to the old classic bands and a wink to the modern Southern Rock bands. A band with 5 people that are passionate to make Copperhead County a well-known name in Europe.
