Demos las gracias a bandas como los aussies Snake Bite Whisky -ganadores del Cool5 de hace unas semanas- por existir.
En momentos de incertidumbre como los actuales, reconforta pinchar un disco tan enorme como «This Side of Hell» y recordar cuales deben ser tus prioridades en esta vida.
Con estos precedentes, nos sentimos con la obligación de contactar con esta banda. Queríamos saber más.

¡Buenas, Jay! Para empezar, ¿podrías presentar Snake Bite Whisky a aquellos infelices lectores que todavía no os conocen?
Somos la puta banda de rock más sleazy de Australia. Una máquina de Sleazy N’ Roll que va a saco y no hace concesiones. Sleaze rock del duro mezclado con una pizca de metal y punk.
“This Side of Hell” … ¡vaya discazo os habéis sacado de la manga! En mi opinión, y ya llevo 30 años siguiendo este género, se trata de un clásico instantáneo del sleazy. “The real deal”, vaya. ¿Sois conscientes de ello? Supongo que estáis muy orgullosos de él.
¡Gracias! Sí, somos conscientes. El caso es que escribimos el álbum sin preocuparnos por las modas actuales ni la corrección política imperante. Creo que la razón por la que las críticas de todo el mundo son tan buenas y su popularidad está subiendo como la espuma es que, tal como apuntabas, el disco es “the real deal”.
No hay pose ni mierdas por el estilo en este álbum. Todas las letras están basadas en experiencias reales que hemos vivido, y eso se al final se nota. Si a eso le añades el hecho de que amamos este tipo de música, todo encaja.
Vale, sois la mejor banda Sleazy de Australia, pero … ¿es que hay más bandas Sleazy en Australia? ¿Se trata de un género importante en vuestro país?
Sí, hay unas cuantas bandas que encajarían dentro los patrones del género, pero probablemente somos la única que se autoproclama sleaze y somos la única que está alcanzando repercusión internacional.
El género en sí no es importante aquí, pero a la gente le encanta nuestra música en cuanto la escucha. Tocamos para todo tipo de público: fans del glam/sleaze, metalheads, gente “normal” … y la respuesta siempre es muy positiva. Nos sentimos afortunados, por qué al fin y al cabo, nos dan la oportunidad de tocar Rock N’ Roll sucio y ruidoso … ¿y quien no ama esa mierda?
Viendo vuestros videos, no sabría decir tu edad. ¡No apostaría un duro! Como yo, no naciste ayer, pero … ¿viviste la era sleazy/hard en los 80’s? ¿o descubriste la escena en los 90’s, cuando todo ya había terminado?
(Risas) Digamos que ya llevo unos cuantos tiros pegados. Cuando era jovencito viví en Suráfrica y el Sleaze allí no era importante. Yo iba con mis botas de cowboy y el pañuelo en la cabeza, mientras que en los demás chavales todo era chupas de cuero y roña (risas).¡Qué tiempos!
Supongo que ese el motivo por el que sonamos más agresivos que las demás bandas de la escena. Volviendo a la pregunta, sí, seguía a GN’R, Faster Pussycat, L.A. Guns, Love/Hate, etc., pero también me flipaban Motorhead y Megadeth. Para mí, no se trata sólo de música, es un estilo de vida y un estado mental.
¿Cómo te metiste en el Rock N’ Roll? ¿Gracias a tus padres? ¿Hermanos mayores? ¿Colegas de clases? ¿MTV? ¿Y cómo fue el momento en que pensaste “no tengo suficiente con escuchar esta música, he de formar una banda”?
Mi padre odiaba el Rock. A mi madre sí que le molaba Queen, Rod Stewart y buena parte del rock setentero y yo solía pinchar sus discos. Más tarde me convertí en un adolescente rarito, así que mi introducción en el rock y el metal fue un paso natural.
Cuando “Appetite for Destruction” cayó en mis manos y me voló la cabeza tanto la música, como la imagen y la actitud fue cuando supe que quería dedicarme a esa mierda.

(NDR. He leído titulares del estilo “Amyl & The Sniffers han conquistado Europa y América”, ¡y en realidad no los conocen ni los rockeros de su casa! Puto marketing)
Mi colega Sergio Crime hace cachondeo diciendo que las bandas hard cantáis sobre follar con groupies femeninas de 20 años, cuando en realidad sólo tenéis groupies masculinos de 50 años. ¿Tienes algo que decirle? ¿Es el caso de Snake Bite Whisky?
Tío, yo no sé a que conciertos va tu colega. En los nuestros hay un montón de chavalas jóvenes.
Tenemos un público heterogéneo: están los viejos rockeros que llevan en la escena 30 años, pero también hay una nueva generación que acude a los shows y muchos de esos chavales son chicas.
En nuestro último show, probablemente un tercio del público eran veinteañeras, pero ya sabes, ¡aceptamos groupies de los 21 a los 101 años!
Ahora en serio, “Drink, Fuck, Rock” (NDR. Estribillo de su tema “Last Man Standing”) … honestamente, ¿qué es lo que hacéis más a menudo?
Joder, ¡pregunta difícil!
El Rock ya viene de serie. En la banda somos todos alcohólicos. Estamos siempre bebiendo, no somos una de esas bandas que canta sobre farras y luego se retira el hotel a beber tazas de té. Siempre somos los últimos en abandonar un garito.
En cuanto al follar, follamos todo lo que podemos. Así que diría que practicamos los 3 conceptos en similar medida.
Nos llamamos Sammy Plays Dirty, así que necesitamos que nos cuentes tu historia más guarra que has vivido en la carretera.
¿Cuántas páginas tengo? En la carretera somos unos putos animales. Creo que Stacii (bajista) y yo hemos regado con nuestro meado todas las habitaciones de hotel en las que hemos estado, nos hemos desmayado en la recepción de varios hoteles o nos hemos despertado en gayumbos tirados en la calle.
Recuerdo esa vez que nos retuvieron en la aduana por que en el equipaje había trazas de farlopa o cuando estuvimos 10 horas en el calabozo en Francia. Tantas buenas historias … demasiadas para compartirlas todas aquí contigo.
Una vez una tía me la chupó mientras su marido pajareaba al otro lado de la puerta. Yo llevaba una de esas orejas gigantes de conejo en la cabeza, fue la polla.

Hemos reclutado a dos nuevos guitarristas y estamos ensayando con ellos. Vamos a lanzar otro par de clips, uno de ellos saldrá muy pronto.
Afortunadamente, nuestra intención era girar durante el segundo semestre del año, así que la pandemia no ha afectado todavía nuestros planes. Estamos agendando fechas para Australia, Nueva Zelanda, Japón y Europa para finales de año y para América el año que viene.
También estamos escribiendo el segundo álbum, que saldrá a principios de 2021. Queremos finalizar la gira de “This Side of Hell” y entonces nos centraremos en rematar el nuevo disco.
Ya sabes, somos animales de carretera. Nos encanta girar y pasar un buen rato con la gente, así que si tocamos cerca de tu casa ven a vernos, pilla una taja, flipa con nuestro show salvaje e invade el escenario cuando toquemos “B.A.M. (Bad Ass Motherfuckers)”.

We are the sleaziest fucking rock band in Australia. An all out, uncompromising, non pc Sleaze N’ Roll machine. Heavy sleaze rock mixed with a dash of metal and punk.
“This Side of Hell” … what a record! In my opinion, and I’ve been into this genre for 30 years, is an instant sleazy rock classic. The real deal. Are you conscious of it? I guess you’re very proud …
Thank you! Yeah we are very conscious of it. Thing is we wrote the album without worrying about current trends or being politically correct within today’s culture. I think the reason it’s been universally loved by critics and why we are growing in popularity is that, like you said “it’s the real deal” there’s no bullshit or fakeness on this record. All the tracks are lyrically based on a real life experience so when your coming from that place it kinda shines through. Add to that the fact that we love playing sleaze and it all works.
OK, you are the best Sleazy band in Australia, but … are there more Sleazy bands in Australia? Is that genre huge in Australia?
Yeah there are a few bands that fit into the genre around the country but we are probably the one that is very vocal about being sleaze and the one that’s breaking out internationally. The genre isn’t huge here but people do love the music when they get to hear it. We play to all sorts of crowds from Glam/sleaze fans to Metalheads to “normal” people and the response is always fucking positive. I guess we are lucky cause at the end of the day were are just playing fucking loud and dirty Rock N’ Roll and who doesn’t love that shit?
Watching your videos and pics, I’m not sure of your age. I wouldn’t bet! Like me, you weren’t born yesterday, but … ¿Did you live the 80’s sleazy/hard rock era? ¿Or did you discover the scene once it was gone, at 90’s?
Haha! Definitely been around the block a few times. When I was younger I lived in South Africa and Sleaze certainly wasn’t very big there so the few of us there were all hung out with the Metalheads. I was all cowboy boots and bandannas and they were all battle jackets and grease. Haha! Great fucking times. I guess that’s probably why we have a harder edge than other bands in the scene right now. But yeah I was into GN’R, Faster Pussycat, LA Guns, Love/Hate etc but was also blasting Motorhead and Megadeth. For me it’s not just the music though it’s a lifestyle and a mindset.
How did you get into RN’R? Parents? Older brothers? Classmates? MTV? And how was the turning point when you though “I don’t have enough listening to them, I’m gonna form a band and BE like them”?
My Dad fucking hated Rock music but my Mum was into Queen, Rod Stewart and a lot of seventies rock so I used to play her albums at first. I was like a weird fucking teenager so naturally fell into the rock and metal scene but the moment I knew I wanted to play music was when I heard “Apetite For Destruction” I was fucking blown away by the music and the style, the image and I was like “That’s what I wanna fucking do” .
Which would be your favourite 5 hard rock/sleazy records ever?
There are so many great sleaze records but these are ones that I’ve played over and over:

A friend of mine jokes about hard rock bands and says “they sing about fucking 20 years old female groupies, but they actually only have 50 years old male groupies”. Is that Snake Bite Whisky case?
Not sure what shows he’s been to but we definitely get a lot of young girls at our shows. I mean crowds are mixed, age wise, you get the older rockers who have been in the scene for like thirty years but there is a whole new generation of rock fans coming to shows and a large amount of those are young girls. The last show we played the crowd was probably a third girls in their twenties but ya know we love all the groupies from 21 to 101!
“Drink, Fuck, Rock” … honestly, what do you do more often?
Fuck! That’s a hard one. I mean the Rock part comes naturally to us and as a band collectively we are kinda functioning alcoholics, I mean we are always drinking, we aren’t one of those bands that sing about partying and then go back to their hotel for cups of tea. We are always the last ones at the venue drinking and as for fucking it’s as much as we can get so I’m gonna say everything in an equal amount.
Since we’re Sammy Plays DIRTY … Could tell us your dirtiest tale from the road?
How many pages do we have? It gets pretty fucking wild on the road. I think Stacii has pissed all over every hotel room we have ever stayed in, passed out on the floor of hotel lobbies, woke up in the street in just underwear. We’ve been pulled over by customs for having traces of cocaine on luggage, detained in France for ten hours and so many more tales from the road, Way too many to share here. I once got a blowjob from a chick whilst her husband was on the other side of the door and I was wearing these big fucking bunny ears, that was pretty funny.

Next movements for Snake Bite Whisky? Plans for the future?
We just recruited two new guitarists so we are rehearsing with them currently. We are gonna drop maybe two more videos from the album which peeps should see the first one pretty fucking soon. Thankfully we were only planning on touring in the second half of the year anyway so the pandemic hasn’t impacted those plans as of yet. We are in various stages of booking tours for Australia, New Zealand, Japan and Europe for this year with the America’s next year. We are also writing the second album right now and eyeing an early 2021 release. We want to finish up touring for “This Side Of Hell” then pretty much kick off touring for the new album. Ya know we are real fucking road dogs, we love being on the road and meeting people and having a blast so touring is very important to us so if we play near you then come along and get fucked up and witness a wild fucking show and invade the stage with us for B.A.M.
