Hace tiempo que Kvelertak dejó de ser el secreto mejor guardado de Noruega. Han pasado 10 años desde su disco debut y quedan pocos rockers alrededor del planeta que no muevan la cabeza al ritmo de sus canciones. Su último disco “Splid” es el cuarto en su carrera y es otro paso más en la evolución del grupo.
Su cantante Ivar Nikolaisen se ha tomado un rato para abrir una cerveza y charlar con nosotros:
Sammy Plays Dirty: El “gran público” quizás no te conocía hasta que te uniste a Kvelertak, pero has cantado en grupos desde hace más de 20 años. ¿Cómo ha cambiado tu vida en estos dos años que llevas en la banda?
Ivar Nikolaisen: En realidad no ha cambiado mucho, pero tengo algo más de “lujo” a mi alrededor. Solía tener un trabajo normal y vivía día a día. ¡Ahora voy de gira en autobús y tengo mejor comida haha!
Debería estar de gira en este momento, pero el Covid-19 llegó como un ladrón en la noche y nos quitó toda la diversión, el dinero y el alcohol. Probablemente tenga que volver a trabajar pronto si esta mierda no para. A pesar de ello, no me puedo quejar, vivo de puta madre. Salgo a pescar y tengo muchas cosas que hacer en casa.
SPD: El sonido de Kvelertak ha evolucionado a través del tiempo, y el último disco “Splid” tiene mucha variedad, tanto con sonidos hardrock-punk como con canciones más melódicas y progresivas. ¿Ha sido tu llegada a la banda lo que ha influenciado esta nueva etapa sónica del grupo?
Ivar: La verdad es que no tengo ni idea, pero supongo que sí. Es lo que la gente dice. En realidad, no sé mucho sobre música, lo mío siempre ha sido la actitud. Nunca he sido un buen músico, simplemente confío en los otros miembros del grupo. Kvelertak no tiene ningún plan sobre cómo hay que hacer las cosas y las pocas veces que lo tenemos nunca sale como habíamos planeado. Creo que eso es algo bueno. Todos somos responsables del resultado a partes iguales.
SPD: También cantas en un grupo que sigue activo, “The Good the Bad and the Zugly”. El sonido de la banda es algo así como death punk con esteroides. ¿Que puedes contarnos del presente del grupo? ¿Hay planes de continuar haciendo conciertos?
Ivar: En realidad no estamos tan activos, pero si tocamos cuando tenemos tiempo. A pesar de hacer 100 conciertos al año con Kvelertak -antes de la pandemia- todavía te quedan 200 días al año para hacer otras cosas. ¡Al menos si eres como yo y no tienes vida!
SPD: En mi opinión, «Silver«, tu antiguo grupo, es la mejor banda de punk rock que he oído y “World against World” es mi álbum favorito. ¿Habrá algún día musica nueva de Silver o giras? ¿O la banda murió para siempre?
Ivar: ¡Muchas gracias! Todos en Silver somos buenos amigos, pero muchos están ocupados tocando con otros grupos (Turbonegro, Oslo Ess, Gluecifer). Ahora me están mandando mensajes diciendo que estaría bien grabar algunos nuevos temas. ¡Creo que están aburridos con el rollo del virus haha! ¡Les he dicho que porqué no!
Hace ya 20 años del “Riot 1-2-3”, es el aniversario. El disco ni siquiera está en Spotify o en ningún lado, así que quizás lo reeditemos y pongamos algunos temas extra.
SPD: Durante años, he escuchado multitud de leyendas urbanas sobre tu particular estilo de vida. ¿Es cierto que vives en los bosques noruegos, sin electricidad, trabajando en la construcción durante el día y bebiendo cerveza barata por la noche? Dicen que llevas así más de 20 años.
Ivar: En ocasiones me gusta exagerar para sonar más interesante y no aburrir a la gente, pero siempre acabo pareciendo gilipollas de todos modos. Pero sí, ese ha sido mi estilo de vida. Siempre he trabajado en la construcción. Es un trabajo duro, pero es un dinero fácil. Y si vives en una cabaña en el bosque no tienes que trabajar demasiado para tus gastos.
Me encanta pescar truchas y estar en casa delante del fuego de la chimenea, esta vida es perfecta para mí. Pero ahora me he modernizado: ¡tengo electricidad! Pero la cerveza que bebo todavía es barata hahaha.
SPD: Por último, nos gustaría que enviaras un mensaje a los fans de Kvelertak en España. En este momento estamos lidiando con cuarentenas, mascaras sudorosas, conciertos cancelados y bares cerrados. Los rockers del país estamos cansados de medidas que no están funcionando. ¿Nos entretendrá Kvelertak una última vez antes de morir, o es vuestra música la vacuna que necesitamos?
Ivar: ¡Estamos deseando volver a España! He tocado 3 shows allí con Kvelertak y ha sido lo mejor de lo mejor. Tenemos que rezar para que esta locura acabe pronto y poder tocar conciertos REALES, para personas REALES, ¡¡¡¡¡¡¡con sonido REAL y con una actitud REAL!!!!!!!

Sammy plays dirty: The «mainstream crowd» didn’t know you before you joined Kvelertak, but you have been singing in bands for 20 years. How has your life changed in these two years since you became Kvelertak’s singer?
Ivar Nikolaisen: Not so much. I have always been touring, but now it`s a bit more luxury. I used to have a day job and I used to live from day to day. We drive a night liner and get better food, haha. I should have been touring right now. but then Covid-19 came like a thief in the night, .
and took away all the fun…. All the cash, the alcohol, you name it….
So now i probably have to go back to work again, if this shit don`t stop. Well, I can´t complain. I have a great life now. I go out fishing and I got lots of stuff to do at home.
SPD: Kvelertak sound has evolved throughout the years, and in the last album «Splid» there is a melodic «hardrock-punk» vibe that wasn’t there in earlier records. The songs in the album vary from fast and hard to progressive and melodic. Do you feel that your vocals are responsible for this fresh evolution of Kvelertak’s sound, or was the band consciously heading in this direction anyway?
Ivar: I have absolutly no idea. But I guess so. That`s what people say. Don`t know much about music actually. I have always been more into attitude. Never beeen a good musician. I trust the other guys. Kvelertak doesn`t have a plan how things are gonna be. Maybe we have a plan, but it always ends up differently. And I think that`s cool. So I am not responsable for the changes. We all are.
SPD: You seem to be pretty active with your band «The good, the bad, and the zugly». The band’s sound is like deathpunk on steroids! What can you tell us about it for those that have never listened to it? Will you ever tour more extensively with them?
Ivar: Not soooo active. We play when we have time. You know, we play like 100 shows a year with kvelertak (I mean we used to before the plague) and there are still more than 200 days left. So we all have time to do different stuff when we`re not busy with kvelertak.
At least if you don`t have a life, haha
SPD: In my opinion, Silver, your ex-band, is the best punk rock band ever to walk this planet, and «World Against World» is my favorite record. Will there ever be new Silver music or tours, or is the band extinguished forever?
Ivar: Thank you so much. They are still good friends. But they are also busy with other bands. Tommy with turbonegro, Peter is playing with Oslo Ess and Gluecifer. Now after covid, i get messages from them that they want to record some songs, just for fun. I think they`re bored. haha
And I said, why not. The Riot 1-2-3 EP has 20 years anniversary next year. And it has never been out on spotify or anything, so maybe we will re-release that one and put on some new extra tracks.
SPD: Throughout the years, I’ve heard urban legends about your particular lifestyle. Is it true that you used to live in the Norwegian woods without electricity, working in construction sites by day and drinking cheap beer by night for 20 years?
Ivar: Well, sometimes I overstate my life just to sound like an interresting person and not a boring guy. But i always end up sounding studpid no matter what.
But yes, i used to do that for a while. I have always been working on construction sites. Hard job, but easy money. And if you live in a cabin in the woods you don`t have to work so much. Since i love fishing trout and love having my own fireplace, that works perfectly well for me. I have upgraded now. I have electricity! But i still drink cheep beer, hahaha
SPD: Lastly, I was hoping you could send a message to the fans of Kvelertak in Spain. At the moment, we are dealing with intermittent lockdowns, and people have to wear sweaty masks all summer with all concerts canceled and the bars closed. Rock fans are getting sick of live streams and failed government rules. Will the next Kvelertak shows help spread the pandemic and entertain us one last time before we are all dead, or is your music the vaccine we need to beat it?
Ivar: We can`t fucking wait to be back in Spain! I have played 3 shows in Spain with kvelertak so far since I started, and it`s been the best. Let`s all just hope this madness will end soon, so that we can play REAL shows, for REAL people wtih REAL sound, and REAL ATTITUDE!!!!!!!
