Double bill of 90s alternative rock with Local H and Soul Asylum on a cold rainy night in Portland (Maine).
Opening the night was Local H, a band with whom I was not familiar but have been around since the early 1990s. A duo comprised of lead singer/guitarist/bassist and drummer, they make loud distorted rock and roll (as Dave Pirner lead singer of Soul Asylum said “they make twice the noise with half the guys”). Too much distortion for my tastes but they were very energetic and managed to get the crowd going.
Up next was Soul Asylum, a standard of the 90 alternative rock scene and one of my favorites. The band has been together since 1981 with lead singer Dave Pirner being the only original member. The band is scheduled to release their 12th studio album later this year.
Playing to a mostly 40 something crowd, the band ran through a collection of their hits playing songs off of most of their 90s albums plus several off the new soon to be released album. Dave Priner still sounds good, and the rest of the band were solid, but not flashy, leaving Dave as the main focus.
Hits like “Misery”, “Black Gold” and “Somebody to Shove” got the crowd singing along and moving. The highlight for all being their most popular song “Runaway Train”. The newer songs sound great, fitting in perfectly with the older classics, and show just how good a songwriter Dave Priner is.
Unfortunately, a large portion of the crowd appear to be more casual fans who came for the hits and did not give the newer songs much of a chance (including several who spent a large portion of the show talking instead of listening to the band). Once “Runaway Train” was played there was a noticeable exodus of people. A shame as they missed out on some great music.
I admittedly have not listened to Soul Asylum in many years but enjoyed hearing them live for the first time. I am looking forward to the new album and leave you with “If I told You” the first song off the new album.

Doble cartel de rock alternativo 90’s con Local H y Soul Asylum en una fría y lluviosa noche en Portland.
Local H abrieron la noche, una banda con la que no estaba familiarizado, pero que ha estado ahí desde los primeros 90’s. Son un dúo formado por un cantante/guitarrista/bajista y un batería, y hacen rock distorsionado y ruidoso (tal como dijo Dave Pirner, cantante de Soul Asylum, «hacen el doble de ruído con la mitad de componentes»). Demasiada distorsion para mi gusto, pero se mostraron muy energéticos y se las apañaron para gustar al respetable.
Acto seguido, saltaban a la palestra Soul Asylum, unos clásicos de la escena alternativa 90’s y una de mis bandas favoritas de esa era. La banda lleva junta desde 1981, con el cantante Dave Pirner Como único miembro original. Tienen previsto lanzar su doceavo disco de estudio a finales de este año.
Con un público formado mayoritariamente por cuarentones, la banda recorrió su colección de hits, rescatando temas de sus álbumes noventeros, además de interpretar unas cuantas canciones de su próximo álbum. Dave Pirner todavía suena bien y el resto de la banda se mostró sólida, si bien se mantiene en un segundo plano y deja todo el protagonismo a Dave.
Éxitos como «Misery», «Black Gold» y «Somebody to Shove» fueron coreados y bailados por el público. El momento álgido fue su tema más popular, «Runaway Train». Las nuevas canciones sonaron muy bien, encajando perfectamente con los viejos clásicos, demostrando que Dave Pirnes es un compositor de primera.
Desafortunadamente, parece una sección importante del público eran posers que vinieron por los hits y sudaban de las nuevas canciones (incluyendo mucha peña que se pasó el show hablando en vez de atender al concierto). Una vez terminó «Runaway Train», hubo un éxodo importante de gente. Una pena que se perdieran todo lo bueno que quedaba.
Admito que no escuchaba Soul Asylum desde hacía muchos años, pero disfruté viendolos por primer vez. Espero con ganas el nuevo álbum. Os dejo con su primer single “If I told You”.
