La mancha hard rockera se está extendiendo y un país vecino como Letonia está empezando a exportar bandas tan válidas como Bloody Heels o los protagonistas de la velada, Quickstrike.
Fans del lado más cafre y agrio del hard rock, puede que algo grande esté a la vuelta de la esquina. Y es que este 11 de febrero se publica el debut de estos bad boys, «None of a Kind«.
Para calentar motores, les hemos sometido a un tercer grado para que nos cuenten el cómo, cuándo, dónde y porqué de su existencia. Y recuerda, la primera entrevista en castellano a Quickstrike la leíste aquí!

¡Hola, tíos! Para empezar, ¿podríais presentar Quickstrike a aquellos lectores que todavía no os conocen?
Somos una banda de rock n’ roll. Lo tomas o lo dejas. Cinco colegas, a veces enemigos, juntos y que se expresan como una única entidad. Como dijo una revista de rock de UK, somos europeos del Este con pseudónimos curiosos que suenan como americanos de la Costa Oeste.
Los 3 singles extraídos de «None of a Kind» me han volado la cabeza. Esas canciones son puro fuego!!! Felicidades. He estado escuchando sleaze rock los últimos 30 años y creedme, no es fácil impresionarme. ¿Todo el disco va a ser así de bueno?
Gracias, apreciamos tus palabras, nos alegra que te gusten. El LP va a ser una pasada de principio a fin. Te subirás a una montaña rusa que te dejará flipado. Pero, hey, contáctanos de nuevo cuanto lo hayas escuchado y dinos si tenemos razón.
Esas guitarras matadoras, esa voz cabreada, las vibraciones punk … vuestra música es una patada en la cara! Me encanta vuestra pegada, tíos. Veo influencias de los primeros Guns N’ Roses, de los Skid Row de «Slave to the Grind» e incluso de una banda tejana de culto llamada Dangerous Toys … el material que más mola. ¿Estáis de acuerdo? ¿Esos serían vuestros referentes?
Gracias, nos gusta lo crudo. Ese tono vintage de las guitarras y la voz cabreada es lo que se ha echado de menos en la música de las últimas décadas. Los primeros GN’R, definitivamente, son nuestra gran influencia. En cuanto a Skid Row, aunque nos gustan como suenan, nunca los vimos como una influencia. Me lo apunto! Eso sí, nuestro cantante luce como el hijo bastardo o el gemelo de Sebastian Bach en algunas fotos. Quizás su madre estuvo en un show de Skid Row hace veintipico años, quien sabe. A Dangerous Toys los hemos escuchado y sí, veo las similitudes.
Somos una bestia de recién creada por un científico loco combinando genéticamente la esencia de Guns, Aerosmith, Motörhead y todo ello espolvoreado con un poco de blues. Ese sería el sonido Quickstrike.
¿Riga Shocks? ¿Daugavpils Shakes? ¿Liepāja Rocks? Primero tuvimos a Bloody Heels y ahora nos llegan Quickstrike. ¿Qué está pasando allí arriba? No os ofendáis, pero en nuestra mente de puretas españoles, Letonia no equivale a rock. ¿Nos estamos equivocando o Bloody Heels y vosotros no sois más que bonitas excepciones? ¿Más bandas letonas que debamos conocer?
¡Valmiera cocks! La mayoría de nosotros (4 de 5) venimos de esa molona ciudad que está en medio del bosque. Sabemos de sobras que a nivel global la gente no conoce Letonia por su música. Además de tener talento, hace falta mucho trabajo y esfuerzo para tirar adelante una banda, y en eso fallan muchos. Te juntas con una piba, guardas tus pelotas en una caja y tiras la llave al mar. Pillas un trabajo de 9 a 5 y aceptas tu mediocridad. Como dice el dicho «Todo el mundo quiere estar cachas, pero nadie quiere levantar peso».
A pesar de eso, hay bandas y cantantes excepcionales que pueden rivalizar con los yankees, pero quedan sepultados entre toda la mierda que genera más ruido y consigue la atención de los medios.
¿Cómo os metisteis en el Rock N’ Roll? ¿Gracias a vuestros padres? ¿Hermanos mayores? ¿Colegas de clases? ¿MTV? ¿Y cómo fue el momento en que pensasteis “no tengo suficiente con escuchar esta música, he de formar una banda”?
Cada miembro tiene una historia diferente. Por ejemplo, Ritchskies (guitarrista) escuchaba basura metalera hasta que se encontró con Fourleaf Graves (batería). Escuchó a Mötley Crüe y Guns N’ Roses y todo cambió para él. Fourleaf Graves estaba metido en el thrash ya desde chaval y era compañero de clase de Armyfox (guitarrista), así que pronto hicieron migas. Freddy Martin tocaba jazz y material acústico por la ciudad, a pesar de que siempre le han molado Pantera y Black Label Society.
De alguna manera, siempre hemos estado metidos en la música y cuando nos conocimos, la cosa hizo click.
Viendo vuestros clips, diría que sois veinteañeros, ¿verdad? ¿Por qué sleazy rock (GRACIAS por la elección) y no emocore, nu metal u otras mierdas que la gente joven escucha y toca con sus bandas?
Estamos a mitad de la veintena, correcto. Es divertido que se nos etiquete como sleazy rock, por que creemos que no encajamos ahí. A veces se nos ha criticado por no sonar como Hardcore Superstar or Crashdïet, los autoproclamados reyes del sleazy, pero es que esa nunca ha sido nuestra intención. Si quieres llamarnos sleazy, hazlo, pero que quede claro: somos una banda de rock n’ roll que toca rock n’ roll.
Cualquier disco antiguo que compares a uno moderno no tiene comparación. Los efectos que utilizan hoy en día dan mucho más volumen y sonido, pero como dicen “cuanto más grandes son, más fuerte caen”, por lo que es una especie de cosa de David-Goliat (recordatorio para algunas bandas: la reverberación cambia la voz, pero no corrige el tono). Artistas reales, tocando sonidos reales, eso es lo que nos atrapó, y todavía nos engancha.
Hoy en día, la mayor parte del trabajo se realiza en el estudio, obtienes una pista mediocre, la afinas al máximo y listo. (Segundo recordatorio: se necesita habilidad para tocar un instrumento, después de 500 retoques ya no cuenta).
Luego vas a ver a la banda en directo y no suenan nada parecido a como suenan en el disco. Puedes llevar tus cajas de efectos, pero esta no es nuestra manera de hacer música. En el pasado, con grupos como Aerosmith, Guns n’ Roses, AC/DC, lo que escuchabas en el disco es lo que escuchabas en directo, y eso es lo que nos mola.
¿Cuáles serían tus 5 discos favoritos de hard rock/sleazy?
«Appetite for Destruction», para todos nosotros, sin duda alguna. Los primeros tres álbumes de Aerosmith estarían cerca, seguidos por «Use Your Illusion I&II».
Un colega hace cachondeo diciendo que las bandas hard cantáis sobre follar con groupies femeninas de 20 años, cuando en realidad sólo tenéis groupies masculinos de 50 años. ¿Es el caso de Quickstrike?
Claro que hay muchas letras cursis y completamente locas sobre eso, en todo tipo de música, en realidad. La gente escribe sobre lo que más le gusta: emborracharse y follar, pero nosotros escribimos sobre cosas que requieren esfuerzo y pensamiento, en lugar de coños y pollas. Coge a tu colega, que se pasé por nuestros conciertos y descubrirá más. Pero bueno, no hay nada malo con los groupies masculinos de 50 años. Como dicen: «New York’s alright if you like saxophones» –nota redactor: título de una canción de Fear que versa sobre el lado más canalla de NYC-, ¿verdad?
Nos llamamos Sammy Plays Dirty, así que necesitamos que nos cuentes vuestras historias más guarras que hayais vivido en la carretera.
¿Qué tal unas cuantas historias? Ambos guitarristas suelen llegar tarde al comienzo de un espectáculo, porque están luchando contra la diarrea por la comida picante o luchando con gente. En algunas fiestas, nuestro cantante se desmaya para luego despertarse de golpe, desnudarse, saltar por la ventana y huir, para nunca regresar (eventualmente lo hace).
En una ocasión, nuestro “chofer” alquiló un coche con una licencia falsa para llevarnos al espectáculo. Le preocupaba más hacer líneas (de coca) detrás del volante que mirar las de la carretera, dando vueltas por los carriles. Sorprendentemente, sobrevivimos y, afortunadamente, ningún policía notó nuestras travesuras en la carretera.
¿Y qué me decís de las estrellas porno letonas? ¿Qué nombre debería teclear en mi próxima visita a Pornhub?
Luize Saint, una dependienta que intentó hacerse rica en el negocio del porno dejándose percutir por 3 viejos. Famosa se hizo. A parte, debemos mencionar a Viola Bailey, Beth Chance (también conocida como Savannah Secret) y a Jessi Empera, todas ellas tesoros nacionales del folleteo.

Somos un tren sin frenos fuera de control, tío. Estamos trabajando en un montón de material. Resumiendo: vamos a grabar un directo, giraremos por Europa al final de la primavera, masterizaremos los temas de nuestro segundo disco, haremos las demos del tercero, haremos más clips con lo temas de nuestro debut … y mucho más, así que estad atentos!

Rock n’ roll band – take it or leave it. 5 friends, sometimes foes, put togeather and expressed as one entity. As one UK rock magazine stated – east europeans who sound like west coast americans and have funky pseudonyms.
Dudes, those 3 singles extracted from “None of a Kind” really blew our mind. Those songs are pure fire!!! Congratulations. I’ve been listening sleaze rock during the last 30 years and believe me, it’s not easy no impress me. Is the whole LP gonna be so fuckin’ good?
Thanks, we appreciate the kind words, glad you like them. The LP is going to be amazing from the first to the last second – it will take you on a sonic rollercoaster and leave you dazed in sweet emotion, but hey get back at us when you listen to it for yourself and tell us we were right.
Those killer guitars, that angry voice, that punk vibe … Your music is a kick in the face! Love your punch, guys. I see influencies from the early GN’R, Skid Row “Slave to the Grind” era and even from a texan cult band called Dangerous Toys … the coolest stuff. Do you agree with that? Are those your references?
Thanks, we like it raw. These vintage guitar and angry voice tones are what’s been missing for a few decades already. Early Guns n’ Roses definitely is the biggest influence, as for Skid Row – although we like the sound, we never thought of it as a big influence, funny thing to add – our singer looks like the bastard son/twin of Sebastian Bach in some shots. Maybe his mom was at a Skid Row show 20+ years ago, who knows. Heard some Dangerous Toys as well, can feel the similarity there, yeah. We are a brand new animal that has been created by a mad scientist by genetically combining the essence of Guns, Aerosmith and a tad bit of Motorhead, with some blues sprinkled on top – that is the Quickstrike sound.
Riga Shocks? Daugavpils Shakes? Liepāja rocks? First we had Bloody Heels, now Quickstrike. What’s going on up there? Don’t get ofended, but in our spanish old farts mind Latvia doesn’t equal Rock. Are we wrong or you and Bloody Heels are just cool exceptions? More Latvian bands deserve to be known???
Valmiera cocks – as most of us cum (4/5) from the cool n’ funky city in the middle of a forest. We are fully aware that on a global scale people barely know Latvia for it’s music, so on top of having a good substance, a lot of work, effort and drive is needed, which most bands here lack. It’s like this – get one pussy, lock you balls in a box and throw away the key. Then get a 9-5, continue and accept medicore results, or quit altogether. «Everybody wants to be a bodybuilder, but nobody wants to lift them heavy ass weights» – like the saying goes. Nonetheless, there are some exceptional singers and bands that can rival the states, but they get buried in the pile of shittier acts around them, which make more noise and produce worse results.
How did you get into RN’R? Parents? Older brothers? Classmates? Internet? And how was the turning point when you though “I don’t have enough listening to them, I’m gonna form a band and BE like them”?
It differs for each member, for example, Ritchskies was listening to modern trash (not thrash) metal untill he picked up a guitar and met Fourleaf Graves & the bad company. And after hearing Mötley Crüe and Guns n’ Roses for the first time was the turning point for him. Fourleaf Graves was into thrash from an early age and was a classmate of Armyfox so they clicked right away. Freddy Martin was jazzing around the town and dabbling in acoustic work, although he fancies some Pantera and Black Label Society til’ this day. In a sense music was always around and when we met – it clicked. The main formation began when Ritchskies and Fourleaf Graves met on a sky slope, both lookin’ to form a band and play their best version of oldschool rock n’ roll, and so here we are today.
Watching your videos and pics, I’d say you’re in your 20’s. Am I right? Why sleazy rock (THANK YOU for your choice) and not emocore, nu metal or the other shitty styles that young people use to play and listen?
We are all in our mid 20’s, that’s right. It’s funny to be labeled as sleaze rock, as we never thought that we fit in that bunch at all. We’ve actually gotten some shit about not sounding like Hardcore Superstar or Crashdïet, the proclaimed kings of sleaze, and it has never been our intention to do so. That’s why it’s strange being thrown in there and getting these comparisons, so if you wanna call it sleaze, do as you please, but we wanna make it clear – we’re a rock n’ roll band and we play rock n’ roll. Any old record you put next to a modern one, blows it away. The effects and quantizing put so much more weight on them, and the bigger they are, the harder they fall, so it’s a David-Goliath kind of thing. (Reminder to some bands: reverb puts the voice in a space, it doesn’t correct the pitch). Real souls, playing real sounds, that’s what got us, and still has that grasp. Nowadays most of the work is done in the studio, you get a mediocre track, and tune the hell out of it, and off it goes. (Follow-up reminder: it takes skill to play an instrument, after 500 tweaks it doesn’t count anymore). Then you go see the band live, and they sound nothing alike. You can pack up your effect boxes, this ain’t it chief, and that ain’t our mojo. Back in the day, with the likes of Aerosmith, Guns n’ Roses, AC/DC Record, what you heard on the record is what you got live, and that’s what we romanticize.
Which would be your favourite 5 hard rock/sleazy records ever?
Appetite for Destruction – for everyone, hands down. The first three Aerosmith records comin’ in on a hot second. Followed by USE YOUR ILLUSSION 1&2
A friend of mine jokes about hard rock bands and says “they sing about fucking 20 years old female groupies, but they actually only have 50 years old male groupies”. Is that Quickstrike case?
Sure there’s a lot of cheesy and completely braindead lyrics about that, in all types of music, actually. People write about what they love the most – getting shitfaced and laid, but we write about things that require effort and thought, rather than pussy and cock. Grab a friend, grab the lyric sheet and drop by a show or five, you’ll find out more. But hey, nothing wrong with male groupies in their 50’s, as they say – «New York’s alright if you like saxophones», right?

How’s about a fuzzy bunch?Both guitarists tend to be late for opening a show, because they are either fighting spicy food diarrhea or fighting off crooks, tryin’ to put drugs down their throat – general annoyance.Some parties our singer passes out just to later jolt awake, strip down naked, jump through the window and run away, never to return (he does eventually). One occasion our “driver” rented a car with a fake license to drive us to the show. He was more concerned with doing lines behind the wheel than looking at the ones on the road, swirling around the lanes. Surprisingly, we survived, and no officers noticed our road shenanigans either, thankfully. How’s that for a brief?
And what about Latvian pornstars? What name should I type at my next visit to Pornhub?
